Characteristics

Leafy dioecious often relatively small globose shrubs up to 50 cm. high; internodes of distal branches 25–40 mm. long, 2–4 mm. wide, rounded to somewhat angled, the nodes often dilated.. Leaves highly variable, elliptic-ovate to oblong, 4–6(–10) cm. long, 2–4 cm. wide, apically obtuse-rounded, cuneate into the base, the margins sometimes crisped, conspicuously 3-veined on both surfaces; petiole 2–7 mm. long.. Bracteal cups of both sexes pedunculate, 2–5 mm. long.. Flowers of both sexes occurring mostly in triads (but occasionally with up to 6 flowers).. Style distinct at maturity; stigma not expanded.. Berries subsessile (stipe less than 1 mm.), ellipsoid, 6–9 mm. high, truncated apically, smooth, greenish white, translucent; tepalar ring-scars 4 mm. in diameter.
