Characteristics

Leafless dioecious shrubs forming spectacular pendulous masses more than 2 m. long; internodes of distal branches 30–50 mm. long, 5–8 mm. wide, strongly flattened (tape-like).. Bracteal cups of both sexes on short peduncles 1–2 mm. long.. Flowers of both sexes sessile.. Staminate flowers borne in triads, dyads or singly.. Pistillate flowers borne singly.. Style clearly developed, 0.5 mm. long, slightly enlarged at base; stigma rounded and only slightly expanded.. Berries on 2 mm. long pedicels, ellipsoid-oblong, 9 mm. long, 5 mm. in diameter, smooth, orange; tepalar ring-scar 2 mm. in diameter, somewhat swollen in developing berries.. Fig. 5/11 (p. 20).
