Characteristics

Leafy dioecious shrubs up to 1–2 m. long, often pendulous, deep green; internodes of distal branches 30–50 mm. long, 2 mm. wide, rounded and generally ribbed when young.. Leaves highly variable, mostly elongate, ovate-oblong to obovate-oblong, 3–8 cm. long, 1–3 cm. wide, apically rounded, basally cuneate, but with a definite petiole, 3–5 mm. long, typically 3(–5)-veined.. Bracteal cups pedunculate, 3–5 mm. long.. Flowers of both sexes sessile and mostly borne in triads (but with up to 5 flowers).. Style distinct, ± rectangular, the stigma not expanded.. Berries ovoid-ellipsoid, 6 mm. high, smooth, yellow to dull orange, ± subsessile; tepalar ring-scar 2.5 mm. in diameter.. Fig. 3/9–10 (p. 8).
