Species

Angiosperms > Santalales > Santalaceae > Viscum

Characteristics

Leafy, monoecious shrubs of small size, probably not higher than 0.2 m, stout, densely branched with short internodes, greyish green with small leaves, much resembling Boscia, one of its principal hosts. Stems rounded to slightly angled; basal internodes of younger branches 8-12 x 1-2 mm (rather consistent in size), older nodes slightly swollen. Leaves mostly oblong to oblanceolate, 6-8 x 3-4 mm, apex mostly obtuse, often minutely apiculate, tapering slightly into the sessile base. Dichasia with central flower typically staminate, lateral pistillate, usually 2 per axil. Berries ellipsoid, c. 3 mm long, smooth, forming a pedicel at maturity up to 1.5 mm long; style persistent.
More
Leafy, monoecious shrub, up to 200 mm tall. Parasitic on species of Maytenus. Internodes usually shorter than 12 mm. Leaves usually less than 8 x 4 mm. Berries pale yellow, 3 mm long, with short pedicel 1.5 mm long.
Like V. rotundifolium but smaller (< 0.2 m tall) and more robust (distal internodes 8-12 x 1-2 mm), with much-branched habit, and small pale yellow berry (3 mm long).
