Characteristics

Leafless monoecious, often globose and erect, densely branched shrubs less than 50 cm. high; internodes of distal branches 10–20 mm. long, 2–3 mm. wide, flattened, older branches becoming rounded.. Bracteal cups sessile.. Flowers of both sexes borne sessile and singly.. Staminate flowers often rare or seemingly absent (as in various other monoecious species where the flowers of both sexes are also borne singly).. Stamens often only 2(–3) at the base of the tepals.. Style minute but distinct; stigma not expanded.. Berries on 1 mm. long pedicels, orbicular, 4 mm. high, smooth, orange; tepalar ring-scar 1.5 mm. in diameter.. Fig. 5/10 (p. 20).
