Characteristics

Shrubs or small trees. Leaves terminal and crowded at shoot apices. Stipules present, sometimes persistent and bristle-like. Leaf-lamina elliptic to obovate or oblanceolate, coriaceous, glabrous or ± puberulous especially when young; midrib and lateral nerves raised, primary lateral nerves ascending, secondary nerves inconspicuous, venation reticulate. Flowers clustered in current leaf axils, usually several per axil, long-pedicellate. Sepals 8, arranged in two dissimilar whorls of 4, slightly fused at base, densely pubescent externally. Corolla of 8 members fused at base into a short tube, each member usually divided again into three segments. Stamens 8, alternating with 8 broad entire staminodes. Ovary densely hairy, 8-locular; ovules solitary. Fruit baccate, dryish and coriaceous, 1-few-seeded. Seeds large, ± ovoid to subglobose, but frequently flattened on one side in fruits having more than one seed; scar large and covering up to half seed surface; endosperm absent; cotyledons plano-convex and occupying the whole of the seed.
