Straggling shrub or small tree 2-4(7) m tall; bark finely fissured, dark grey-brown; older stems red-brown tomentose; young stems yellow-brown tomentose, angular, often ribbed. Leaves 3(5)-foliolate; petioles 0.5-3 cm long, grooved; median petiolules 0.1-0.9 cm long; leaflets 1.5-5 x 1-2.4 cm, median leaflet largest, elliptic to narrowly obovate, ± rounded or bluntly acuminate at the apex, cuneate at the base, entire or widely toothed or crenate toward the apex, somewhat coriaceous, shiny dark green and glabrous on upper surface, sparsely pubescent beneath, nerves sunken above with reticulation ± raised beneath, often with tufts of hairs in the axils of the lateral nerves beneath. Inflorescences axillary, of ± slender simple few-flowered dichasia 3.5-6 cm long, with scattered yellow hairs; bracteoles linear. Calyx obconical, 5-toothed, gland-dotted, pubescent, somewhat accrescent in fruit; tube 4-4.5 mm long. Corolla 16-18 mm long, usually gland-dotted, pubescent, glandular hairs present, sweet-scented; tube creamy-white, 7-10 mm long, straight; lobes bright mauve or violet, spreading to reflexed, middle lower lobe largest, 8-12 x 9-12 mm. Stamens clearly exserted from tube; filaments with glandular hairs. Ovary globose, truncate apex, not gland-dotted, pubescent at apex; style c. 15 mm long. Drupe (5)10 x 7-10 mm, obovoid, rounded at apex, not enclosed in the enlarged calyx, black at maturity; fruiting calyx cup-shaped, pubescent, not gland-dotted.
