Characteristics

Leaves 3-foliolate; petioles 0.5–4 cm long, terete; median petiolules longest, 0.1–1 cm long, lateral petiolules short or absent; leaflets 1.3–5 × 1–3 cm, median leaflet largest, ovate-lanceolate to broad elliptic, rounded to acute at apex, rounded at the base, subentire to irregularly deeply serrate toward the apex,somewhat membranous, glabrous or with a few hairs mainly on the midrib on upper surface, puberulous especially on the midrib and paler beneath, nerves sunken above and ± raised beneath, reticulation delicate.

Spreading shrub, often much branched from ground level, 1–8 m tall; bark smooth or fissured, flaking, dark or light grey-brown; older stems grey-brown pubescent and young stems orange-tawny tomentellous, shortly tomentose on buds.
Corolla c. 14 mm long, gland-dotted, pubescent, with glandular hairs, flowers sweet-scented; tube white, 5–6.5 mm long, straight; lobes mauve to violet, spreading to reflexed, middle lower lobe largest, 7–8 × 5 mm.
Drupe c. 1.2 × 0.8–1 cm, obovoid, rounded at apex, scarcely enclosed in the enlarged calyx, purple-black at maturity; fruiting calyx saucer-shaped, delicate, pubescent, not gland-dotted.
Inflorescences axillary, of ± slender simple 1–7-flowered dichasia 3–5 cm long, with orange-tawny hairs; bracteoles linear, up to 1.5 mm long; pedicels to 10 mm long.
Calyx obconical, 5-toothed, pubescent, gland-dotted, accrescent in fruit; tube c. 2 mm long; teeth 0.3–0.5 mm long, erect.
Ovary globose, with a few apical gland-dots, glabrous, rounded at apex; style c. 6.5–9 mm long.
Stamens clearly exserted from tube; filaments with scattered glandular hairs.
