Characteristics

Tree 12-15 m tall; trunk reaching 25 cm in diam.; bark smooth, brown; inner bark reddish. Branches furrowed, puberulent. Leaves imparipinnate; rachis plus petiole 8-25 cm long, slightly flattened and angled, striate, puberulent; leaflets 5-9, alternate, chartaceous, the adaxial surface glabrous, the abaxial surface glabrous or minutely puberulent, especially along the prominent midvein, vein axils foveate, oblong or elliptic, 7-17 (30) × 3.2-7.5 (12) cm, the base obtuse or acute, decurrent into the elongated petiolule, the apex obtuse to shortly acuminate, the margins entire; petiolules slender, puberulent. Thyrses distal, paniculate, 9-25 cm long, the axes minutely pubescent. Flowers in pedunculate, simple dichasia; calyx green, puberulent, sepals 1.5-1.7(2) mm long, ovate, free to the base, ciliate; petals cream or white, as long as the sepals, ciliate, with two suprabasal, marginal, wooly appendages. Capsule brown, flattened-pyriform, 2.8-3.5 cm long, pericarp woody, ca. 3 mm thick, endocarp shortly brownish wooly to puberulent. Seeds brown, nearly ellipsoid, 2-2.5 cm long, with a trigonous, fleshy, yellowish aril at base.
