Species

Angiosperms > Asterales > Campanulaceae > Wahlenbergia

Characteristics

Perennial or annual herb from a taproot or in old perennating specimens from a long, woody rootstock. Stems few to many, erect or rarely ± decumbent, 12-90 cm tall, glabrous, hirsute or puberulous (hairs often ± curled). Leaves alternate, sessile, linear to lanceolate or very narrowly elliptic, up to 8-75 mm long, 1-12 mm wide, acute, glabrous or ± pubescent; margin cartilaginous, usually slightly re volute, ± undulate-dentate, denticulate; midvein protruding beneath, lateral veins obscure or prominent. Inflorescence lax, sometimes ± contracted, rarely almost spicate; pedicels up to 2-15 mm long, glabrous or rarely pubescent. Hypanthium (7-)10-nerved, glabrous or rarely pubescent. Calyx-lobes 0.8-4 mm long, usually glabrous, sometimes with markedly cartilaginous margins. Corolla 2-8 mm long, blue, white, yellowish or sometimes reddish, split almost to the base into linear lobes, puberulous inside near the base, glabrous outside. Stamens ca. 2-5 mm long; filament-bases ± broadly dilated, ciliate, anthers 0.7-2.5 mm long. Ovary 3-locular, semi-inferior. Style about as long as the corolla, eglandular, glabrous or hairy below; lobes 3, 0.1-0.8 mm long. Capsule 3-locular, 2.4-6 mm long (7-)10-nerved; valves 3, 0.5-2 mm long. Seeds elliptic in outline usually with acute ends, ± trigonous, 0.4-0.7 mm long; testa almost smooth.

A herb. It can grow each year from seed or keep growing from year to year from the taproot. This taproot can become long and woody. The stems are 12-90 cm long. They can be erect or lying over. There can be curled hairs. The leaves are 8-75 mm long by 1-12 mm wide. They are alternate and do not have leaf stalks. The leaf edges can be thickened or curved backwards. The flowers have a ring or cup shaped structure with 10 veins. The flower tube is blue, white or yellow. The fruit is a capsule with 3 sections. It is 3-6 mm long. The seeds are 0.5 mm long.
Leaves up to 8–75 x 1–12 mm., alternate, sessile, linear to lanceolate or very narrowly elliptic, acute, glabrous or ± pubescent; margin incrassate, usually slightly revolute, ± undulate–dentate; midvein protruding beneath, lateral veins obscure or prominent.
