Characteristics

Perennial ?short-lived herb with prostrate or decumbent stems, 10-50 cm long, often rooting at the nodes, dichotomously branching, ± hirsute or rarely glabrescent. Leaves opposite, sessile to subpetiolate, elliptic to narrowly ovate, 8-30(-50) mm long, 2-8(-17) mm wide, acute or subacute, slightly mucronate at the apex, cuneate at the base, ± hirsute to glabrescent; margin cartilaginous, ± undulate-crenate; midvein prominent beneath, lateral veins usually obscure. Inflorescence frondose with flowers in dichotomous forks or terminal, but usually becoming overtopped and then appearing lateral; pedicels 0.8-35 mm long, usually ± hirsute. Hypanthium hemispherical, 10-nerved, hirsute or rarely glabrous. Calyx-lobes narrowly triangular 1.6-3 mm long, ± hirsute, denticulate, usually recurved in fruit. Corolla 2A-6.4 mm long, white, usually glabrous; tube 0.8-2.6 mm long. Stamens 2-3.5 mm long; filament-bases slightly broadened, ciliate; anthers 0.8-1.8 mm long. Ovary subinferior, 3-locular. Style shorter than the corolla, eglandular, slightly thickened in the upper part, usually glabrous below; lobes 3, up to 1 mm long. Capsule 3-locular with 3 thin and low valves. Seeds elliptic in outline, bluntly trigonous, 0.5-0.6 mm long; testa reticulate, pale brown to almost black.
