Leaves up to 7–40·x 1·5–10 mm., alternate, linear to ovate (basal leaves usually short and broad), acute to subacute, with cuneate to truncate base, ± hirsute, especially beneath; margin incrassate, ± dentate; midvein prominent beneath, lateral veins ± obscure.
Ovary 3–locular, semi–inferior; style c. as long as or somewhat shorter than the corolla, eglandular, slightly thickened in the upper part, glabrous or rarely hairy below; lobes 3, 0·3–0·6 mm. long.
Corolla 3–6·5 mm. long (outside the F.Z. area 1·5–7 mm.), blue, white or yellow, split almost to the base into linear lobes, ± hairy or glabrous outside.
Stem with few to many usually long branches, rarely unbranched, ± hirsute along its entire length or glabrous in the upper part, rarely all glabrous.
Inflorescence lax or with flowers in ± dense axillary and terminal clusters; flowers subsessile or on glabrous or hairy pedicels up to 20 mm. long.
Seeds 0·4–0·7 mm. long, elliptic–oblong in outline, compressed; testa almost smooth.
Calyx–lobes 0·8–3·2 mm. long, ± ciliate–pubescent or glabrous; margin incrassate.
Filament–bases ± broadly dilated, ciliate; anthers 0·5–1·6 mm. long.
Annual ± erect often ± spreading or straggling herb, 5–40 cm. tall.
Capsule 3–locular, ± 10–nerved; valves 3, 0·8–2·5 mm. long.
Hypanthium ± obconical, ± 10–nerved, ± hairy or glabrous.
