Perennial herb, up to 60 cm. tall, from a taproot.. Stems many, erect or often prostrate at the base and ascending, few-branched, ± hirsute at the base.. Leaves alternate or lower ones opposite, lanceolate to narrowly ovate, 5–25 mm. long, 1–7 mm. wide, acute, with cuneate to truncate base, ± hirsute; margin cartilaginous, sparsely denticulate, sometimes undulate; midvein prominent beneath, lateral veins obscure.. Inflorescences few-flowered, lax, often reduced to a solitary terminal flower; pedicels up to 30(–60) mm. long, glabrous.. Hypanthium narrowly obconical, ± 10-nerved, glabrous.. Calyx-lobes 1.6–4 mm. long.. Corolla 4–6.5 mm. long, white or tinged with blue or grey-blue, deeply split into ± narrowly elliptic lobes, ± puberulous inside near the base, glabrous outside; tube 1.2–2.2 mm. long.. Filament-bases ± dilated, ciliate; anthers 1.2–2 mm. long.. Ovary 2-locular, subinferior; style shorter than the corolla, slightly thickened in the upper part, eglandular, glabrous or slightly pubescent below; lobes 2, 0.7–1.2 mm. long.. Capsule 2-locular, narrowly obconical, up to 17 mm. long; valves 2, 0.8–3.2 mm. long.. Seeds elliptic in outline, ± compressed, 0.6–0.7 mm. long; testa almost smooth.. Fig. 2/B, I, p. 6.
