Characteristics

Erect herb ± 1 m. tall, probably perennial.. Stem robust, ± 4 mm. thick, sparingly branched, hirsute but less so above.. Leaves lanceolate, up to 40 mm. long and 9 mm. wide, hirsute; margin somewhat cartilaginous, dentate; midvein protruding beneath, lateral veins faint.. Inflorescence strongly contracted; flowers subsessile, with ciliate bracts.. Hypanthium 10-nerved, glabrous.. Calyx-lobes 2–3.5 mm. long, ciliate.. Corolla violet, ± 6 mm. long, deeply lobed, hairy inside near the base, glabrous outside; tube ± 2 mm. long.. Filament-bases linear, ciliate; anthers ± 1.2 mm. long.. Ovary 3-locular, subinferior; style shorter than the corolla, hairy below; lobes 3, ± 1.5 mm. long, with 3 tiny glands between their bases.. Capsule 3-locular, 10-nerved; valves 3, ± 1 mm. long.. Seeds elliptic in outline, ± 0.6 mm. long, almost smooth (only young seeds seen).
