Characteristics

Plants 200-450 mm high. Corm depressed-globose, 15-20 mm diam.; tunics finely netted. Stem simple. Leaves 3 or 4, ± basal, uppermost leaf partly or entirely sheathing stem, ± half as long as spike, linear, 5-12 mm wide, midrib poorly defined and margins not or lightly thickened; bract-like cauline leaves 1 or 2, sheathing. Spike 8-to 14-flowered; bracts green, dry and brown above, 15-22 mm long, overlapping, ± as long as, shortly notched apically. Flowers zygomorphic, bright salmon-orange or rarely mauve, lower 3 tepals often with darker median line toward base; perianth tube with lower part 14-18 mm long, enclosed or emerging 2-5 mm from bracts, upper part ascending, subcylindric, 13-16 mm long, 4 mm diam. at mouth; tepals obovate, 17-20 x 9-19 mm, spreading widely or slightly cupped. Filaments unilateral and arcuate, 15-20 mm long, not or barely exserted from tube; anthers 6-7 mm long, violet or yellow. Style dividing between base and middle of anthers, branches 5-7 mm long. Capsules narrowly cylindric to prismatic, 15-18 x 2 mm. Seeds slender, 7-10 x ± 2 mm, 2-winged.
