Characteristics

Plants 350-900 mm high. Corm depressed-globose, 20-30 mm diam.; tunics coarsely netted, outer becoming finely fibrous. Stem with (1) several short, suberect branches. Leaves 5 or 6, ± basal but upper partly sheathing stem, 1/2-2/3 as long as spike, linear-lanceolate, 8-15 mm wide, midrib and margins lightly thickened and hyaline; bract-like cauline leaves 2 or more, long and tightly sheathing. Spike 10-to 18-flowered; bracts ± dry and brown, 5-8 mm long, inner as long as or slightly longer, somewhat membranous, forked apically. Flowers zygomorphic, pale red; perianth tube with lower part 10-14 mm long, emerging 7-8 mm from bracts, upper part horizontal, subcylindric, 12-15(-20) mm long, 4-5 mm diam. at mouth; tepals oblanceolate, 12-15 x 5-8 mm, all widely spreading. Filaments unilateral and arcuate, 22-26(-30) mm long, exserted 8-12 mm from tube; anthers 6.5-8.0 mm long. Style arching over stamens, dividing near anther apices, branches 3-4 mm long. Capsules obovoid-globose, up to 10 mm long. Seeds angular with distal ridge, 5-6 x 2 mm.
