Characteristics

Plants 500-1000 mm high. Corm depressed-globose, 20-30 mm diam.; tunics finely netted, extending upward as a fibrous collar. Stem erect, with simple or with 1 or more short, erect branches. Leaves (1)2 or 3, lower 2 ± basal, ± as long as stem, linear, 4-6 mm wide, midrib moderately and margins heavily thickened and hyaline, third leaf, if present, inserted on lower part of stem and partly to entirely sheathing; bract-like cauline leaves overlapping upper part of stem up to spike. Spike congested, 25-to 35-flowered; bracts green at base, dry and brownish in upper half, clasping stem only at base, 7-10(-15) mm long, inner shorter, forked for 2-3 mm. Flowers zygomorphic, pale yellow to cream-coloured or maroon; perianth tube with lower part 8-9 mm long, emerging 2-3 mm from bracts, upper part horizontal to drooping, funnel-shaped, 7-9 mm long, ± 5 mm diam. at mouth; tepals suberect and flaring distally, obovate, 10-18 x 5-7 mm. Filaments unilateral and arcuate, 10-12 mm long; anthers 5-8 mm long, yellow. Style arching over stamens, dividing near base of anthers, branches ± 2 mm long. Capsules globose, 5-8 mm long. Seeds narrowly ovoid-angular, 3-4 x 2 mm.
