Characteristics

Subshrubs. Stems terete, solid. Leaves alternate, long petiolate. Racemes with spirally arranged flowers. Receptacle disciform, beaked at middle. Calyx funnelform, 19-veined, 5-toothed. Corolla obliquely tubular-campanulate, 2-lipped, upper lip 2-lobed, lower lip 3-lobed. Disc absent. Stamens 4, posterior 2 longest; anther cells 2, divaricate. Ovary apex shallowly 4-lobed, ovules anatropous; style subterminal. Nutlets 4, lower 2 sometimes undeveloped, obovoid, dorsiventrally flattened, with special pore of funicle bundle; exocarp thin, longitudinally 5-ribbed. Embryos erect, radicle directed downward, cotyledons fleshy.
