Characteristics

A low, spreading shrublet, usually 20-40(-60) cm high, much branched; old branches grey, rigid but rarely with particularly pungent ends; young branches glabrous, often angular or sulcate. Leaves of long-shoots more or less glaucous, glabrous (or with isolated hairs); on distinct but not particularly prominent nodes; pedicel varying from less than to about 5 (seldom up to 7) mm, usually persisting for some time after the leaflets have been shed; leaflets very variable, usually oblanceolate or narrowly obtriangular, from less than 2.5 to more than 12 mm long and from 1.5 to more than 4.5 mm wide, with cuneate base and rounded to truncate apex with an apicula varying from merely distinct to c. 0.5 mm in length. Short-shoots only seen in some of the material; the short-shoot leaves with petiole of about same length as or longer than the leaflets. Racemes usually 3-5 cm long, with (1-)4-12(-16) flowers; axis glabrous. Bracts shed at an early stage, lanceolate, 1.2-2.0 mm long, acuminate or acute, glabrous or with stray hairs at the base. Pedicel glabrous, usually slender, from c. 2 to more than 3.5 mm long. Bracteoles similar to the bracts, 0.8-1.2 mm long, not so readily shed. Calyx tube broadly campanulate, glabrous, sometimes with purplish tinge; the upper two lobes well separated from the lower three, 0.5-1.0 mm long, deltoid-triangular, acute to acuminate; lowest lobe 0.7-1.1 mm long, triangular, occasionally apically subulate. Petals cream-coloured to pale lemon-coloured, glabrous, rather rounded at the apex. Standard blade elliptic to obovate, 6.3 x 3.5-5.2 mm, rounded, slightly incurved at the apex, strongly reflexed at the base at anthesis; claw 2.8-3.5 mm long. Wing blades 5.0-6.0 x 2.5-2.8 mm; claws 2.5-3.0 mm long. Keel blades halfmoon-shaped, 5.1-6.0 x (2.6-)3.0-3.8 mm, with lower margin rather strongly upcurved and apex obtuse; claws 2.1-2.7 mm long. Pistil with relatively Iong stipe and an elongate, (5-)6-10-ovulate ovary prominently winged above; ovary in ripening stage with smooth, non-reticulate sides, relatively long. Fruit a closed, papery samara (fully developed fruits seen only in one collection), at least sometimes up to 22-26 x 11-14 mm (inch stipe); walls wreak and somewhat undulate, papery when dry; the upper wing up to more than 4 mm broad.
