Characteristics

An erect rigid shrublet or shrub usually 30-120 cm high, with straight, rigid branches, the old ones covered with grey hark, the young ones densely grey-sericeous. Old inflorescence axes hard, strong and thorn-like. Short-shoots richly developed. Leaves more or less densely grey-sericeous. Those on long-shoots with distinct, sometimes slightly shield-like leaf base, often very shortly petiolate, the petiole from less than 0.5 to more than 5 mm long, and with leaflets narrowly obtriangular, 5-9 x (1.5-)2.5-3.5 mm large, rounded-obtuse or truncate to retuse, with an apicula. Leaves of short-shoots with petioles becoming up to 6-12(-14) mm long (short in early stages). Inflorescence a raceme usually 2-5 cm long, with strong, thorn-like, sericeous axis and (1-)2-12 flowers. Several raceme-bearing branchlets often present below the terminal spike on each branch. Bracts and bracteoles subulate or linear, 0.6-1.2 mm long, shed at early bud stage. Pedicel sericeous, 1.2-2.2 mm long. Calyx openly campanulate, c. 2 mm long, sericeous (occasionally tomentose); upper lobes 0.6-0.9 mm long, lowest lobes often slightly longer and narrower than the upper. Petals light yellow. Standard blade elliptic, 6.0 x (3.5-)4.0-4.5 mm, slightly pubescent on the central apical parts of the back; claw 3.2-3.5(-4) mm long. Wing blades (4.1-)4.8-5.7 x 2.3-2.7 mm; claws (2.0-)2.6-3.0 mm long. Keel blades 5.5-7 x 3.2-3.5 mm, claws 2.5-2.7 mm long. Pistil with some pubescence on stipe and ovary base; ovary short, with (3-)4 ovules. Fruit variable, inch stipe 8-16 x 6.2-8.5 mm in size, placental crest or wing from 0.6 to more than 2 mm broad; fruit sides strongly reticulate, but veins not organized into an even longitudinal ridge or wing.
