Wiborgia sericea Thunb.

Species

Angiosperms > Fabales > Fabaceae > Wiborgia

Characteristics

A spreading or erect shrublet or shrub varying between about 30 cm and 1.2 m in height, with rigid, straight branches, the old ones covered with grey bark, the young ones densely sericeous to villous. The latter branches terminated by few-flowered racemes, below them a number of young branches. Inflorescence axes finally becoming hard and pungent thorns. Leaves similar to those in W. leptoptera, more or less closely grey-sericeous, very variable in size according to stage of development and population; pedicels of long-shoot leaves usually much shorter than those of the axillary short-shoot leaves. Petioles varying from about 1 mm or less up to more than 13 mm; leaflets oblanceolate-spathulate, 5-12 x 1.5-3.0(-3.5) mm, rounded-obtuse to slightly retuse, occasionally acute, soft. Flowers solitary or more often 2-6, seldom up to 12 or more, in terminal racemes. Bracts and bracteoles subulate-linear, up to 1.5 mm long, sericeous to villous, shed in the early bud stage. Pedicel 1.5-3 mm long, sericeous (to villous). Calyx tube 2-2.5 mm long, campanulate, sericeous to villous; lobes triangular, 0.4-0.8 mm long, acute, pubescent. Petals light yellow. Standard blade ovate, 6.2-8.0 x 4.5-6.0 mm, generally pubescent on the midrib of the back, otherwise glabrous, strongly recurved at the base during anthesis; claw 3.8-4.0(-4.8) mm long. Wing blades oblong, obtuse, 5.5-6.5 x 2.8-3.5 mm, glabrous; claws 2.5-3.2 mm long. Keel blades almost pointed and curved upwards at the apex, 6.3-8.0(-9.0) x 3.9-4.6 mm, glabrous, without or with very indistinct lateral spurs; claws 2.4-3.2 mm long. Pistil with long stipe sericeous on most parts; ovary with an upper wing and a more or less distinct ridge on each side; ovules 4-6. Fruit a samara, orbicular in side view, 11.0-17 x 8-14.5 mm (excl. stipe and style base), strongly compressed, with upper wing about 3 mm broad or more, and with a longitudinal prominent ridge or wing on each side; between the lateral ridges and the placental veins a few distinct, perpendicular veins.
More
Erect or spreading, rigid, thorny shrub, 0.3-1.2 m tall. Leaves 3-foliolate, densely grey-haired, leaflets oblanceolate-spathulate to rounded-obtuse. Flowers (1-)2-6(-12), in terminal racemes, light yellow. Pod indehiscent, strongly compressed, orbicular, with a prominent 3 mm or more wide upper wing, both sides laterally ridged or winged and transversally veined.
