Wiborgia tenuifolia E.Mey.

Species

Angiosperms > Fabales > Fabaceae > Wiborgia

Characteristics

Shrub erect, much branched, probably 70-140 cm high. Branches glabrous, with greyish bark on the old parts, pale greyish-brown to purplish on young parts. Ends of branches turning into relatively weak thorns. Leaves glabrous, dull green. Long-shoot leaves each subtended by a blunt leaf base tubercle; petiole from less than 0.2 to 2 (occasionally up to 3.5) mm long, shortest on the distal parts of the young branches; leaflets cuneate-oblong to oblanceolate, 2-6 (seldom up to 12) x 1.2-2.8 mm, apiculate to mucronulate, flat or more commonly longitudinally incurved. Short-shoot leaves (not always developed) when present with petioles more than 1 mm long. Racemes sparse, often up to more than 10 cm long, with (2-)6-15 flowers frequently more than 5 mm apart; inflorescence axis usually somewhat glaucous-pruinose. Bracts and bracteoles caducous, seen only on the flower buds, bracts then up to more than 1.5 mm, bracteoles up to 1.0 mm long, attenuating at both ends, glabrous. Pedicel glabrous, 1.2-2.5 mm long in the flowering stage. Calyx glabrous, campanulate, with pointed lobes, the upper 0.3-1.0 mm and the lowest usually 0.7-1.4 mm long. Petals glabrous, more or less purplish or rose-coloured. Standard blade obovate, 4.8-6.5 x 4.2-5.0 mm, with apex obtuse to subacute and slightly incurved (usually not as strongly reflexed at the flowering stage as for example W. mucronata); claw 2.2-3.7 mm long. Wing blades oblong to narrowly ovate, 4.5-6.O x 2.0-2.5 mm, rounded-obtuse, with prominent upper basal lobe; claws 2.0-2.5 mm long. Keel blades 6.0 x 2.8-3.6 mm; claws 1.8-2.5 mm long. Pistil glabrous; stipe 2-2.5 mm long; ovary ridged above and with distinct lateral ridges; ovules (2-)3-4(-5). Fruit an almost papery samara, 11-18 x 6-10.5 mm incl. the narrow stipe; upper wing up to 2.5 mm broad, thin; lower marginal parts wing-like, flat; the sides each with a prominent, longitudinal crest or wing bearing a prominent marginal vein.
