Monoecious, glabrous trees. Leaves trimorphic, alternate or opposite, distichous or orthostichous on plagiotropic branches, sessile, broad-based, decurrent, with numerous subparallel, longitudinal veins. Cones terminal on first-order, leafy, plagiotropic branches. Male cones cylindrical; sporophylls spirally arranged, with short stipes and somewhat thickened valvate apices. Female cones spiny; bract and scale fully fused; bract scales winged, spirally arranged, bearing a single, inverted ovule adaxially and centrally; bract scales shedding at maturity to leave the persistent, thick, central axis. Seeds with a single, narrow, circumferential wing, free from bract-scale. Germination epigeal. Cotyledons 2, oblong or lanceolate, subsessile, with fine, subparallel, longitudinal veins.
