Characteristics

Shrub or small tree to 5 m high; branchlets puberulous, with a few whitish lenticels. Leaves: lamina ovate-elliptic, rarely obovate, 2–5 cm long, 1–2.5 cm wide, shortly acute to rounded-obtuse at apex, entire or serrate, regularly toothed or finely crenate margin, chartaceous to subcoriaceous, slightly glossy above, dull below, puberulous on midvein; base slightly decurrent; secondary veins 4–6 pairs; petiole 2–3 mm long, puberulous. Flowers in short axillary or lateral racemes, or solitary; rachis and pedicels puberulous; sepals 4, glabrescent outside, pubescent inside, the margin ciliate; outer pair ovate, inner pair broadly obovate-orbicular, c. 1 mm long; disc flat, c. 7-lobed. Male flowers: stamens 10–12; filaments c. 1.3 mm long, glabrous. Female flowers; staminodes absent; ovary glabrous, ovoid-globose; style very short with 2 bilobcd stigmas; placentas 2, each with 2 ovules. Fruit globose-ovoid, 4–6 mm diam., red, with 1–4 seeds.
