Characteristics

(Shrub or) tree to 15 m high, flowering at 2 m; branchlets puberulous, glabrescent, with scattered lenticels. Leaves: lamina elliptic-oblong or elliptic to ovate, mostly 4–11 cm long (juvenile leaves to 15 cm long), 2–6 cm wide, acute or bluntly acuminate at apex (rarely obtuse to almost rounded), entire or minutely crenate margin, chartaceous to subcoriaceous, green (somewhat paler on lower surface), glossy both surfaces, puberulous on midvein; base cuneate with two small sessile marginal glands (also 2–6 glands scattered along margins); secondary veins 5–10 pairs; petiole 3–7 mm long. Flowers in axillary fascicles or short racemes of c. 8 flowers in males, fewer in females; pedicels puberulous or glabrescent, 2–4 mm long. Sepals 4 or 5, ovate, c. 2 mm long, densely pubescent inside and on margin. Male flowers: disc multilobed; stamens c. 30; filaments c. 2 mm long, glabrous. Female flowers: disc multilobed; staminodes 1–4 or absent; ovary glabrous, ovoid-globose, tapering to 2 connate styles 0.5 mm long; stigmas irregularly 2-lobed; placentas 2, each with 2 ovules. Fruit globose or ovoid-globose, c. 5 mm diam. [8–10 mm diam., fide Harden 1990, Floyd 2008], red, with 1 or 2 seeds [1–4 seeds, fide Harden 1990].
