Characteristics

Deciduous dioecious trees or sometimes shrubs, flowering generally before the leaves emerge. Leaves pinnate; leaflets 3–7 pairs, sometimes staggered on the rhachis to give the appearance of a terminal leaflet, the terminal and upper leaflets equal to or longer than the lower, entire or crenate, with simple hairs or glabrous. Inflorescences terminal or in the axils of young or undeveloped leaves, with sessile or stalked dense clusters of shortly pedicelled flowers. Sepals (3–)4–5, joined in the lower part, herbaceous, hairy outside.. Petals absent. Disk complete, flat or cup-shaped, glabrous. Stamens 4–5; filaments glabrous, in bud bent through two zigzags; anthers basifixed, spherical in outline, the connective elliptic, as wide as the anther-sacs; staminodes lacking anthers. Ovary 2-locular; style with 3 stigmatic lobes; ovules 2 per locule, suspended from the upper part of the axis. Fruit a reddish drupe with one cavity and one seed by abortion. Aril absent; testa of seed with stomata.
