Characteristics

Perennial creeper or climber to 1 m.; rootstook tuberous; stems slender, almost glabrous, rooting and forming small tubers at the nodes.. Leaf-blade triangular, sometimes ± obscurely 5-lobed by lobing of the basal part of the leaf-margins, rarely sagittate or reniform, cordate at the base, entire or slightly sinuate-toothed, glabrous, somewhat punctate above, succulent, shining, dark green with pale green or marbled veins, rarely brownish-green with greyish veins, 26–60 mm. long, 27–76 mm. broad; petiole 6–28 mm. long.. Monoecious.. Male flowers in rather contracted 7–21-flowered racemes on 7–41 mm. long peduncles; pedicels 1–13 mm. long; receptacle-tube 2.5–3.5 mm. long; lobes filiform, up to 0.5 mm. long; petals white with semi-transparent lines, becoming cream with age, 2–4 mm. long, 1.5–2 mm. broad; stamens 3, subsessile.. Female flowers solitary, often coaxillary with ♂, on 8–12 mm. long pedicels; ovary fusiform, beaked, 7–12 mm. long, 1–2.5 mm. across; receptacle-tube 2–2.5 mm. long; lobes 0.5 mm. long; petals 2–4 mm. long, 1–2 mm. broad, united below.. Fruit on a 6 mm. long stalk, fusiform, smooth, scarlet and translucent, 10–13.5 mm. long, 6–7 mm. across.. Seeds pyriform in outline, compressed, with broad grooved edges, distinct raised margin and smooth convex depressed disk, 3.5 × 2 × 0.5 mm.
