Characteristics

Small tree or shrub 3–12 m high, with densely rusty-woolly young stems, inflorescence axes and flowers. Leaves: lamina ovate to broadly elliptic, (35–) 55–75 (–95) mm long, (18–) 30–45 (–50) mm wide, obtuse, rarely cuneate or cordate base, entire or serrulate margin, bluntly acuminate or obtuse apex, ± concolorous, glabrous above, rusty-pubescent beneath; petiole (5–) 7–12 (–15) mm long; stipules 2–8 mm long, often caducous except on seedlings. Inflorescence a distinctly zig-zag shaped rhipidium. Pedicels 0.5–3.5 mm long. Hypanthium 1.5–2.8 mm diam. Sepals 1–2 mm long. Petals cucullate, 1.2–1.6 mm long. Stamens 1.1–1.6 mm long. Disc corrugate, sparsely pubescent. Ovary inferior; carpels 3 (or 4); style 0.1–1 mm long, glabrous or pubescent. Fruit black (red when young), globular, 14–26 mm long.
