Characteristics

Plants 20-45 cm. high.. Corm 15-20 cm. in diameter, tunics of moderately coarse reticulate to thick and clawed fibres.. Foliage leaves 3-4, lanceolate to nearly linear, 4-8(-14) mm. wide, plicate to weakly folded, the lowermost 1 or 2 basal or nearly so, the lowermost largest, reaching at least to the base of the spike, sometimes barely exceeding it, the upper leaves cauline and reduced in size, a single main vein or sometimes 2-3 primary veins produced.. Stem (1-)3-4-branched, the branches ascending.. Spike with 20 or more flowers on the main axis, fewer on the branches; bracts green below, dry apically, densely papillate, the outer ± 2 mm. long, the inner nearly 3 mm.. Flowers cream to greenish, reddish or purple; perianth-tube 3-4 mm. long, widening gradually from base to apex; tepals ± linear-spathulate, the upper 1-1.2 cm. long, slightly wider in the upper third and then ± 2 mm. wide, the other tepals 5-6 mm. long, recurving and twisted loosely.. Filaments ± 1 cm. long; anthers ± 2 mm. long.. Style reaching to ± the middle of the anthers, curving downward when receptive.. Capsules 3-4 mm. long; seeds globose, 2-3 mm. in diameter..
