Lemma ±terete or sometimes slightly laterally compressed, with margins usually not completely enclosing palea, lobed (in Australia), stiffly membranous to coriaceous, variably hairy on nerves; corona absent; coma present; awn persistent, geniculate, with column only weakly developed at maturity, usually loosely twisted basally, usually scabrous or scaberulous. Palea 30–100% of length of lemma (subequal in Australia), coriaceous. Lodicules 3.
