Stem freely branched, 2-4 dm. tall, sharply angled or narrowly 4-winged, setose at the nodes, on the internodes glabrous, pilosulous, or glandular-pubescent; leaf-blades ovate, ovate-oblong, or oblong, 1-2 cm. long by half as wide, acute or subacute, cuneate at base into a short petiole, 3-nerved, glabrous, pubescent, or glandular; flowers solitary in the axils, on pedicels 1-4 mm. long; hypanthium broadly campanulate, 2 mm. long, usually glabrous, sometimes sparsely pubescent or glandular; sepals triangular, equaling the hypanthium; petals 5-6 mm. long; episepalous anthers truncate, about equaling the connective, this bearing two slender spurs about 1 mm. long; epipetalous anthers smaller, the connective barely prolonged and bearing two minute, rounded, basal tubercles.
