Trees or shrubs, all parts (except the ripe fruit) containing toxic cardiac glycosides. Leaves opposite and decussate, exstipulate. Flowers white tinged with red, borne in dense axillary cymes, sweetly scented. Sepals imbricate, free to base, ovate to lanceolate. Corolla hypocrateriform; tube cylindrical; lobes contorted, overlapping to the left, shorter than the tube. Ovary superior, glabrous, bicarpellate, syncarpous with axile placentation; ovule 1 per locule; style filiform; stigma minutely bifid. Fruit a berry, containing one or two seeds.
Corolla hypocrateriform; tube cylindrical, ± straight-sided, the inner surface usually pilose in the upper half and wrinkled below; lobes contorted, ovate, elliptic or subcircular, much shorter than the tube, overlapping to the left.
Ovary glabrous, bicarpellate, with 1 ovule per loculus; style filiform, glabrous, reaching to level of anthers; stigma minutely bifid, hairy, with a ring of papillae below.
Stamens inserted in the top of the corolla tube; anthers subsessile, without carina, with a tuft of hairs at apex.
Trees and shrubs with poisonous sap, without spines or tendrils.
Fruit a globose to ellipsoid berry containing 1 or 2 seeds.
Flowers in dense axillary cymose fascicles.
Seeds plano-convex, with glabrous testa.
Calyx lobes imbricate, free to base.
Stipules absent.
