Characteristics

Annual; culms 20–40 cm. high, prostrate and rooting at the nodes below.. Leaf-blades broadly linear to narrowly lanceolate, 5–18 cm. long, 5–20 mm. wide, glabrous or sparsely pubescent, with indistinct cross-veins, constricted at the base, acuminate to a filiform tip.. Inflorescence 6–12 cm. long, the racemes 2–6 cm. long, bearing distant pedicellate spikelets, often secondarily branched and panicle-like.. Spikelets narrowly elliptic, 3–3.5(–4) mm. long, glabrous (the tip sometimes pubescent), turning black at maturity, the glumes separated by a very short internode; upper glume and lower lemma slightly thickened at tip; upper lemma barely crested, but with a green median spot at the tip.
