Characteristics

Perennial herbs or small shrubs with simple or branched stems. Leaves sessile or nearly so, narrowly lanceolate to ovate or oblong; lateral nerves mostly strong; stipule-sheath produced into a 3–13 fimbriated lobe. Flowers usually heterostylous, small, in many-flowered cymes or corymbs or in subglobose heads. Calyx-lobes 4, lanceolate to ovate-triangular, keeled. Corolla shortly tubular, densely hairy at the throat; lobes 4, often with some additional filamentous lobes between. Ovary 2(–3)-locular; ovules numerous on peltate placentas; style filiform, shortly hairy, usually undivided but sometimes bifid at the apex; stigma-lobes subglobose or ovoid. Disc farinose or very shortly pubescent. Capsule subglobose, produced into a conical beak which opens both loculicidally and septicidally. Seeds numerous, angular.
