Characteristics

Densely caespitose annual or short-lived perennial. Culms to 30 cm high, 2-noded, mid-culm internodes glabrous. Leaves scattered along culms; basal sheaths scabrous in grooves between nerves; ligule 1–2 mm long, obtuse or truncate, erose; blade folded, subulate, to 5 cm long, 0.4–1.4 mm wide. Panicles open, to 8 (–15) cm long, partially exserted initially and eventually exserted; primary branches in alternate clusters of 1–4 branches, spreading to divaricate, bare at base. Spikelets 2–3 mm long. Glumes subequal or unequal; lower glume 2.3–3 mm long, upper glume 2–2.7 mm long. Lemma 1.7–2 mm long, truncate, usually awnless or rarely shortly awned, 5-nerved, glabrous; awn, when present, arising 50–75% above base and shorter than or equal to body of lemma. Palea vestigial or absent. Anthers 0.2–0.5 mm long.
