Characteristics

Erect or geniculately ascending loosely tufted perennial, sometimes with a rather short rhizome. Culms slender, to c. 90 cm high, ±4-noded, mid-culm internode smooth and glabrous. Leaves scattered; basal sheath densely scaberulous to scabrous between nerves; ligule 2–5 mm long, obtuse, jagged; blade flat or becoming involute, linear, 1.5–4 mm wide. Panicles narrow, lax, 10–35 cm long, exserted; branches alternate in groups of 1–4, ±spreading. Spikelets produced towards ends of ultimate inflorescence branches, 2–2.5 mm long. Glumes subequal or lower slightly longer, 2–2.5 mm long. Lemma 1.25–2 mm long, truncate or minutely toothed, unawned, 5-nerved, glabrous. Palea minute or absent. Anthers 0.8 mm or longer.
