Characteristics

Slender, caespitose, erect or geniculate annual. Culms to 30 cm high, 1 or 2 noded; mid-culm internodes smooth or scabrous below node, glabrous. Leaves basal; basal sheaths scabrous; ligule c. 3 mm long, obtuse, laciniate; blade flat, linear and filiform, 5–10 cm long, 1–1.5 mm wide. Panicles contracted, c. 12 cm long, exserted; primary branches paired or clustered, narrowly spreading to ±erect, bearing spikelets almost from base, filiform. Spikelets c. 2 mm long. Glumes unequal; lower glume   long; upper glume 1.8 mm long. Lemma 1.2–1.5 mm long, truncate, awned, 5-nerved, glabrous; awn much longer than body of lemma (1.5–2 times length), arising from mid-point of lemma, with column not twisted. Palea absent. Anthers c. 0.3 mm long.
