Caespitose perennial. Culms to c. 35 cm high, usually 2-noded; mid-culm internodes glabrous. Leaves mostly basal; basal sheath ribbed, ±glabrous; ligule 1–3 mm long, truncate, entire or erose; blade flat or involute, linear, to 12 cm long, to 2.5 mm wide. Panicles open, to 10 cm long, fully exserted; primary branches alternate in groups of 1–4, stiffly spreading, bare in lower half. Spikelets held at tips of secondary inflorescence branches, 2–3 mm long. Glumes subequal to unequal; lower glume 2–3 mm long; upper glume 1.75–2.75 mm long. Lemma 2–2.5 mm long, muticous, 5-nerved, glabrous. Palea vestigial. Anthers 0.5–1.6 mm long.
