Characteristics

Very slender, erect, ascending or loosely caespitose annual. Culms to 40 cm high, 2-noded; glabrous. Leaves mostly basal; basal sheaths ribbed; ligule 0.5–2 mm long, obtuse or truncate; blade folded or involute or occasionally flat, filiform, 2–7 cm long, 0.25–1 (–1.5) mm wide. Panicles open, few-flowered, 3–10 (–12) cm long, long-exserted; primary branches alternate in groups of 1–6, stiffly spreading to divaricate or reflexed, longest less than 3 cm long, bearing spikelets towards distal ends. Spikelets 1.5–2 mm long. Glumes diverging, subequal, 1.5–2 mm long. Lemma ovate, 1.5–2 mm long, usually muticous, 5-nerved, glabrous. Palea vestigial or absent. Anthers 0.3–0.5 mm long.
