Erect or geniculate-ascending loosely tufted perennial, sometimes with a rather short rhizome. Culms slender, to c. 80 cm high, ±4-noded; mid-culm internodes scaberulous. Leaves basal; basal sheaths densely scaberulous to scabrous between nerves; ligule 2–5 mm long, jagged; blade flat or becoming involute, linear, 1.5–4 mm wide. Panicles open or contracted, 10–35 cm long, exserted; primary branches alternate in groups of 1–many, ±erect. Spikelets held toward ends of ultimate inflorescence branches, 1.8–2 mm long. Glumes subequal or lower slightly longer, equalling spikelet. Lemma ovate, 1.25–2 mm long, truncate or minutely toothed, unawned, 5-nerved, glabrous. Palea minute or absent. Anthers usually less than 0.5 mm long.
