Species

Angiosperms > Poales > Poaceae > Agrostis

Characteristics

Perennial tufts of variable habit, to c. 100 cm, spreading by long stolons, sometimes low-growing and trailing, or turf-forming, sometimes loosely or densely tufted; branching intra-and/or extravaginal, the intravaginal shoots often trailing and elongating as stolons or sometimes erect, the extravaginal shoots at once ascending with 2-3 scale leaves at base. Leaf-sheath smooth or slightly scabrid, green or purple-tinged. Ligule (1)-2-6 mm, rounded, fimbriate, taller than wide. Leaf-blade 1-20 cm ×c. 1-8 mm, flat, minutely scabrid on ribs, tip acute. Culm geniculate to rarely erect, or trailing and branching, rooting at lower nodes, internodes glabrous. Panicle 3-28 × 0.5-2.5-(6) cm, lanceolate to ovate, lax at flowering, later ± contracted with branches ± erect and appressed to rachis; rachis smooth, branches and pedicels scabrid. Spikelets 1.5-2.5-(3) mm, greenish or yellowish, becoming brownish or purplish. Glumes ± unequal, elliptic-lanceolate, sometimes slightly scabrid above, acute to acuminate, midnerve scabrid above. Lemma 1.3-2 mm, ± truncate, smooth to ± scabrid below, 5-nerved, nerves sometimes scabrid, outer lateral nerves usually slightly excurrent, apex minutely lobed above inner lateral nerves, midnerve not reaching lemma apex, usually terminating as an extremely minute projection in upper ⅓ of lemma, or midnerve rarely produced as a short, subterminal awn. Palea usually ½ to ⅔ length of lemma, apex usually obtuse, rarely shallowly notched. Callus glabrous or with very few minute hairs. Anthers 0.9-1.5 mm. Caryopsis c. 1 × 0.4 mm. Plate 2B.
More
Perennial, tufted, stoloniferous; stolons slender, leafy, widely spreading, developing after anthesis. Culms erect or geniculate and rooting at base, 30–50(–100) cm tall. Leaf sheaths smooth; leaf blades linear, flat or inrolled, 4–10 cm × 2–5 mm, scaberulous, apex acute to acuminate; ligule on non-flowering shoots 2–3.5 mm, rounded to truncate, often lacerate. Panicle narrow, linear to lanceolate in outline, 5–20 cm, open only at anthesis, otherwise contracted, often dense; branches several per node, closely divided, ascending, scabrous, main branch at a node often bare in lower 1/3, but accompanied by shorter branches bearing spikelets to base. Spikelets 1.8–3 mm, yellowish green; glumes lanceolate, subequal or lower glume slightly longer, lower glume scabrous along keel distally, upper glume often smooth, apex acute; callus minutely hairy; lemma 3/4 as long to subequaling spikelet, usually awnless, apex rounded; palea 1/2–3/4 length of lemma. Anthers 0.8–1.5 mm. Fl. Aug.
Erect or ascending stoloniferous perennial, occasionally shortly rhizomatous. Culms to 40 cm high, 2–4-noded; mid-culm internodes smooth. Leaves scattered; ligule 1–7 mm long, obtuse, erose or laciniate; blade flat, linear, to 18 cm long, 0.5–5 mm wide. Panicles open at anthesis and contracted afterwards, to 21 cm long, exserted; primary branches alternate in groups of 1–6, spreading, rarely more than 3 cm long, shorter ones bearing spikelets almost to base. Spikelets densely clustered, 2–3 mm long. Glumes equal or subequal, 2–3 mm long. Lemma ovate, 1.5–2 mm long, usually muticous or more rarely awned, obscurely 5-nerved, glabrous; awn shorter than lemma body, subapical. Palea 50–65% length of lemma. Anthers 1–1.5 mm long.
Much like no. 2 [Agrostis gigantea Roth], and perhaps not sharply distinct, but not rhizomatous, though sometimes with stolons; panicle greenish or stramineous, seldom over 10 cm, narrower, especially after anthesis, with ascending or erect branches; 2n=28–46. Native of Europe, cult. and intr. as in no. 2. Two confluent vars.
A tufted grass. It has stolons and keep growing from year to year. It grows 15-100 cm high. The leaf blades are 1-10 cm long and 1-5 mm wide. The flower panicle is narrow. It is 1-13 cm long.
