Characteristics

Large liana up to 15 m high, with white latex; trunk 3–10 cm in diameter; bark smooth; branches dark brown with cream lenticels; branchlets puberulous.. Leaves petiolate; blade elliptic, rarely obovate, 15–32 cm long, 4–15 cm wide, apiculate at the apex, rounded or less often cuneate at the base, glabrous above, densely pubescent beneath, with 5–20 pairs of rather straight secondary veins forming an angle of 45–80° with the midrib; petiole 3–10 mm long, puberulous.. Inflorescence terminal, 4–12 cm long, many-flowered, dense, puberulous; peduncle 5–30 mm long; pedicels 1–3 mm long.. Flowers fragrant; sepals ovate, 1.5–3 mm long, 1.3–2 mm wide, obtuse, with one large colleter near the edge; corolla yellow, orange, orange-brown or cream, red in the throat and often also outside the tube; mature bud with anellipsoid or (narrowly) ovoid head about 0.5–1×as long as the tube, ciliate; tube 7–11.5 mm long, 1.5–2 mm wide; lobes obliquely obovate, 5–9 mm long, 4–6.5 mm wide, rounded; stamens inserted 3.5–5.5 mm from the base; style 2–3.1 mm long; ovules 50–100 in each carpel.. Fruit dark brown, 26–62 cm long, 0.7–1 cm wide, pubescent; seed up to 25 mm long; coma 3–7 cm long.
