Perianth segments 6, dimorphic, free; sepals spreading; petals connivent around androecium and gynoecium, glandular at tip. Stamens 3, or 6 in 2 whorls; outer whorl fertile, sterile, reduced or absent; filaments often winged or dilated at base; anthers versatile, dehiscing by slits, introrse. Ovary superior, trilocular; ovules numerous per locule; placentation axile; style usually obconical; stigma 3-lobed. Fruit usually a loculicidal capsule. Seeds numerous, flat, black.
