Characteristics

Dioecious or less often monoecious shrub 0.5-2 m high. Bark smooth. Branchlets ascending, to 15 cm long; articles 6-14 mm long, 0.6-1.2 mm diam., smooth, glabrous; phyllichnia rounded; teeth 7-11, spreading to recurved, usually somewhat overlapping, 0.3-2 mm long, marcescent. Male spikes rarely moniliform, 1-3 cm long, 3.5-7 whorls per cm; bracteoles persistent; anther 0.7-1.2 mm long. Cones cylindrical, sessile or on peduncle to 3 mm long; cone body 13-25 mm long, 7-13 mm diam.; bracteoles obtuse to broadly acute, pyramidal protuberance slightly shorter than bracteole body. Samara 4-8 mm long, very dark red-brown to black.
