Characteristics

Spikelets up to 15 mm long, lanceolate, straw-coloured tinged with purple; glumes subequal, 6.5–8.5 mm long, ovate-lanceolate, glabrous; lowermost floret male or with well developed ovary, the lemma 7.5–8.5 mm long including the aristate lobes, with a geniculate central awn up to 10 mm long; fertile lemmas c. 6 mm long including the shortly aristate lobes; central awn c. 8 mm long.

Caespitose perennial up to 65 cm tall; culms slender; outer leaf sheaths striate, breaking up into a 5 cm deep cushion of fibres, the inner sheaths lanate; leaf lamina usually convolute, up to 16.5 cm × 3.5 mm (when expanded), attenuate, sparsely pilose above, glabrous below.
Panicle lax, up to 25 cm long, lanceolate, the branches spreading or ascending, glabrous, the terminal pedicels up to 19 mm long.
