Spikelets up to 12 mm long, linear-lanceolate, deeply suffused with purple; glumes narrowly ovate to lanceolate, shortly pilose, the inferior 4–6.3 mm long, the superior 5.7–7 mm long; lowermost floret with well developed ovary, the lemma 4.5–6.5 mm long including the aristate lobes, with a geniculate central awn up to 10 mm long; fertile lemmas similar to the inferior.
