Characteristics

Massive, erect to decumbent herb; rhizome c. 10–15 cm diam., clothed in old leaf bases. Leaves: petiole green to pinkish purple and faintly marbled to deep chocolate brown; blade sagittate, to c. 80 cm long; posterior lobes acute to rectangular; secondary venation flush with lamina abaxially, not forming interprimary collective veins. Inflorescences on long robust peduncles subequalling petioles; spathe c. 25 cm long, constricted between ¼ and ⅓ way from base; limb opening wide, green to yellowish green, leathery; spadix subequalling spathe; female zone c. 3 cm long, separated from male zone by a long attenuate sterile interstice; male zone c. 8 cm long; synandria narrow, longitudinally orientated, 2–36-staminate; anthers opening by apical pores; appendix subequalling male zone, tapering to a point.

They can be 70 cm long by 60 cm across. The leaf stalk is usually inserted at the edge of the leaf. The flowers are close together along the stalk. These have a leafy spathe around them. The fruit are red oval berries.
