Characteristics

Dioecious (sometimes monoecious?), mostly annual. Leaves held close to stem; sheath membranous, 4–6 mm long; ligule 1–2 mm long, mostly deeply cleft; blade linear, 2–8 cm long, 0.1–0.2 (–0.3) mm wide, entire, acute to acuminate or tapering to very short mucro. Male flowers solitary on short pedicels; perianth minute, united; anther mass 1.2–1.6 mm long, 6-celled. Female flowers solitary or clustered; perianth segments ±bifid, 2.5–4 mm long; pedicels 5–10 mm long, frequently elongating to 2 cm; style from as long as to longer than fruiting ovary, 2–3 mm long; stigma narrow, obliquely funnel-shaped with an irregularly serrate margin. Fruiting carpels much longer than perianth, cylindric, 2–3 mm long, l:w 3–6, smooth, dark brown; carpophore 0.5–1 mm long at first, sometimes elongating to 3–4 mm long.
