Althénia filiforme (fr), Althénie filiforme (fr)

Species

Angiosperms > Alismatales > Potamogetonaceae > Althenia

Characteristics

Annual. Stems creeping and erect, the branching system is complex; creeping stems bearing scale-like leaves, but not rooting at every internode, occasionally they grow above the substrate; erect stems unbranched, thread-like, up to 15 cm long, bearing 3 or 4 foliage leaves, terminating in I or more leafy inflorescences. Foliage leaves usually alternate, rarely opposite; sheathing leaf bases ±5 mm long, with ear-like lobes, with a short ligule; leaf blades hair-like, up to 5 cm long, less than 1 mm wide, with a single midvein, without submarginal veins and transverse veinlets. Flowers in leafy, terminal clusters, with a central male flower borne on a stalk up to ±5 mm long, with 1-3 female flowers at the base (occasionally the male or the females are lacking-unisexual shoots are not uncommon). Male flower of 1 stamen supported by 3, minute, basal scales (perianth); anther with 2 compartments (pollen sacs); connective not extended at the tip. Female flower usually with 3 carpels, each subtended by a toothed scale; styles 2-3 mm long; stigmas peltate, symmetrical. Funnel-shaped to almost discoid. Fruits ellipsoid to oblong-ellipsoid, almost symmetrical, ±2 mm long (excluding the spine-like, persistent style), smooth, becoming hairy when the outer coat decays.
More
Very small, creeping, submerged annuals. Roots 4-7 from a node, simple, long, densely covered by long root-hairs. Rhizome branched, slender, with a deciduous, lanceolate, amplexicaul scale from each node. Stems simple, erect, up to 15 cm long, filiform. Leaves usually aggregated above, filiform-setaceous, up to 5 cm long, sheaths folded, membranous, about 5 mm long, above forming a forked appendage 2-3 mm long, becoming frayed with age. Flowers aggregated above. Male flowers solitary, on a pedicel which elongates up to 4-5 mm during anthesis so that the anther is just exserted; often with 3 as yet undeveloped female flowers beside them; perianth a small 3-toothed cup, with the unilocular anther sessile or subsessile, pollen globose. Female flowers usually 3 together, ovary stipitate, enfolded in a membranous bract, narrow-ovoid, unilocular, with a long style and a saucer-shaped apical stigma. Fruit a stipitate, cylindrical, slightly oblique, drupelet crowned by the persistent pin-like style and stigma-base.
Annual herb, hydrophyte, height depending on depth of water; rhizome branched, slender, with a deciduous, lanceolate, amplexicaul scale from each node; roots simple, densely covered with long root-hairs; stem simple, filiform. Leaves filiform-setaceous, up to 50 mm long; sheaths membranous, forming a forked appendage above. Male flowers solitary, on pedicel elongating for up to 4-5 mm during anthesis so that anther is just exserted; perianth a small 3-toothed cup, with 1-thecous anther sessile or subsessile; pollen globose. Female flowers usually 3; (1-)3-carpellate; carpels stipitate, narrowly ovoid, unilocular; stigma saucer-shaped. Flowering time Oct.-? Fruit a stipitate, cylindrical, slightly oblique drupelet.
Small, creeping, submerged, annual aquatic with very fine stems (± like horse hair) up to 150 mm long and terminating in 1 or more leafy inflorescences. Leaves alternate, rarely opposite, sheathing base with ear-like lobes, blade filiform. Flowers green, inconspicuous.
