Characteristics

Marine, dioecious, ?annual. Leaves held close to stem; sheath 4–5 (–10) mm long; ligule c. 2 mm long, usually deeply cleft and appearing bi-auriculate; blade linear, (1–) 2–3 (–5) cm long, (0.2–) 0.3–0.4 (–0.5) mm wide, entire, usually truncate with central mucro. Male flowers arising singly in successive leaf axils with only 1 (rarely 2) mature at a time; perianth segments 3, minute; pedicel elongating, becoming filiform and 1–1.5 cm long at anthesis; anther mass 1.0–2.5 mm long, 6-celled; connective not extended. Female flowers axillary; perianth segments bifid, 1.5–3.5 mm long; pedicel 1–2 (–5) mm long, extending beyond leaf sheath, subtending leaves reduced and subopposite; style as long as or longer than fruiting ovary; stigma obliquely funnel-shaped with irregularly dentate margin. Fruiting carpels smooth, 1.1–2 mm long, l:w 1.5–2.5, not exceeding perianth; carpophore to 1 mm long, not elongated.
